Ahmed O. Shalash receives US$ 30,000 Global Fellowship Award from the United States Pharmacopeial Convention
August 14, 2014, The United States Pharmacopeial Convention has today awarded Ahmed Ossama Shalah, the M.Sc. student in our group, US$ 30,000 global fellowship award for investigation of performance descriptors of dry powder inhalation carriers.
The United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) Global Fellowship Awards aims at advancing research involving quality standards for medicines. Mr. Shalash was one of three recipients of the 2014–2015 Global Fellowship Awards. The two other recipients are PhD candidates from the University of Notre Dame and the University of Massachusetts. The research of the three candidates will involve analytical tools useful in researching the safety of biopharmaceutical drugs, the detection of substandard drugs in the developing world and the quality of dry powder inhaler products.
Mr Shalash’s research deals with investigation of the role of carrier porosity/surface roughness in carrier-based dry powder inhalation mixtures. The ultimate goal of the project is development of characterization techniques that express performance and are suitable for routine quality control of dry powder inhaler products. The possibility of replacing lactose with other carriers will also be studied.
